Melting snow and rainfall have aggravated the already serious inland water situation in Hungary where close to 400,000 hectares are affected. The country has not seen such inland flooding in 11 years. Close to 200 people had to be evacuated nationwide

At least three houses have become inhabitable in the last 72 hours and six more people had to be evacuated because of inland waters in Csongrád county, southeast Hungary, alone – according to János Tátrai, the spokesperson for the county’s disaster prevention authority.

Regarding national figures, the director of the National Disaster Prevention Chief Directorate, György Bakondi says flood and inland water management activities are conducted in 235 settlements in 12 of Hungary’s 19 counties (mostly in the eastern part of the country), involving thousands people and 500 pieces of technical equipment like pumps. 63 buildings have collapsed or become inhabitable, resulting in the evacuation of close to 200 people. The county most affected is Bács-Kiskun between the Tisza and Danube rivers.
