CHRISTOPHER CONDON is a correspondent for the Financial Times, covering
Hungary, Romania and Slovenia. He has lived in central Europe for
12 years, working previously for Business Week and the Economist Intelligence
Unit.
MARK FODOR is the director of Amnesty International in Hungary. Following
a personal interest in the region, he has traveled on numerous occasions
to Russia and Central Asia.
TAMÁS RÓBERT GALAMBOS is a Budapest-based freelance writer specializing
in political, cultural and social themes. He has a background in classical
music and currently studies political science and philosophy.
NANCY LAFOREST is a freelance journalist based in Budapest, writing
for Budapest Week Publishing. Her areas of interest are cultural and
social issues, and she also aspires to write fiction.
NÓRA LAKOS is a freelance journalist based in Budapest. She is a
regular contributor to Hungarian daily Népszava, and deputy editor
of the cultural website ontheglobe.com. She currently studies film
direction.
RENÉ LE CLERE is a freelance writer working in Montréal, Canada.
He has published nearly 1,000 articles on places as diverse as Haiti
and Vietnam. Le Clere writes about culture, history, genealogy and
heraldry.
GREGOR MAYER is the correspondent for the German Press Agency (dpa)
in Baghdad covering the current Iraq war. He previously worked as
a correspondent in Budapest and Belgrade.
MÁTÉ NYUSZTAY is a staff writer for Hungarian daily, Népszabadság.
He covers Hungarian issues and foreign policy with a special interest
in Russia and the CIS.
ROMAN OLEARCHYK has covered Ukraine as a journalist for five years
for publications including Businessweek, Economist Intelligence Unit,
Platts and the Kyiv Post.
NICK THORPE is a writer, broadcaster and film-maker, based in Budapest
since 1986. He is now a roving BBC correspondent for a region roughly
corresponding to the old Ottoman Empire.
JUSTIN WASTNAGE is senior reporter at weekly aerospace business magazine,
Flight International. He reports on aero-political affairs from Brussels
and writes on air transport, corporate jets and defense aircraft.

He has corresponded for the German Press Agency dpa and is a contributor
to the Wall Street Journal Europe and the Canadian Press.

The cover image is a 1988 work of the contemporary Hungarian artist Tamás Galambos
entitled “Red Square”. The work was painted when at the time a small airplane
landed in Red Square, and to the shock of the people of the USSR it went undetected
by the Soviet military authorities. Not long after the incident, the Soviet empire
fell.
